Motor Wiring

Please excuse my numptyness in advance.......
Ive got a nice heavy duty drill which has a new Brook Crompton Delta star motor on it. It says on the plate 240/415v.
Is this motor able to run on my single phase 240v supply. If so could somebody please advise me how to connect the wiring.

Not really - it's a 3 phase motor.

It's a three phase motor. It can't run on single phase without either;

- wiring a single phase, and giving it a flick to start it. this is a bodge and will give poor performance.

- fitting a variable speed drive/inverter. This will generate variable 3 phase from a single phase 240 supply. it will give you good performance, including the ability to vary the speed from typically 10% - 100%.

The 240v on the plate refers to Delta wiring, and you'd need to change it over from the star configuration its in now, but that's easy done.

A 0.37kW inverter isn't that expensive, and is certainly good value for money.

Probably, but you won't gain variable speed and the smoother running of a 3ph motor.

The latter might not be so relevant but the former is the reason I'm converting my 1ph pillar dill to 3ph, it's too fast for large dia holes, even on the highest ratio pulleys.

Would you get enough torque at low speed using an inverter?

Yes, a decent inverter should provide constant torque up to the motor frequency, above that it should provide constant power.
