Another one for the sparkies on the forum.

I have just had a replacement motor for my Milling Machine, all fine and good but thought I would ask about the old motor.

Specification, single phase, 240v, forward & reverse, 2hp, about 1.5K rpm

The motor stopped working and when switched on just made an electrical noise, changed the 250v capacitor and nothing, changed both 250v & 450v capacitor and the motor would run BUT slower, also when belts attached the motor couldent handle any load.

Can this be fixed, is it viable to be fixed, would like it for a polishing machine.

On the topic of Polishing machines I just bought some flanged bearing for the build, the bearings are offset in the housing, no problem as I can still use them BUT for what reason would they be offset?

Think the off-set acts as a collar that you can put grub screws in to lock the bearing to the shaft.......

Probably faulty windings on the motor, not cost effective to have rewound.

The groove in the top of the pillow block casting is so that you can use a long allen key to nip up the grub screw,

Don't forget to guard the shaft as well as the pulley, it will pull you in quicker than a quick thing

Sounds to me like you may have had a faulty start capacitor which has caused the motor to just sit and hum when you wanted it to run. This in turn means the windings are subject to high current. The higher loading on the windings may have damaged the shalak insulation so reducing the motors torque under load. Rewind required to rectify and not cost effective.

Send the motor to Embassy Services in Kent. They do really good rewinds for a good price. I get all my stator motors rewound by them! I send about 3 a month to them.
