Motor or Linisher

Hi Guys

Have recently saved a Linisher from the scrap yard and was looking for some advise
on motor selction and the position of the motor. I do have a single phase motor (as in pic)
but this will not fit inside the cast iron pedestal housing, where I assume it should go and also
would 1 ph be underpowered for hobby use.

I was thinking about purchasing a motor form Machine Mart as I guess a modern motor is more likely
to fit within the pedestal housing. Any comments/suggestions welcome. Regards Steve

well first of all, locate where the motor should fit, then see if yours fits.

a more modern motor doesn't mean it will be smaller, there are many many types of motors available.

single phase will be fine, just don't push it too hard.

Yes tried the motor and it won't fit inside the pedestal. You can see two studs protruding from the side of the pedestal, in fact
there is four threaded holes which would accommodate a motor mounting bracket. Was trying to establish if 1HP single phase would be sufficient and if anyone has fitted a modern motor to this machine as it would look better with the motor hidden inside the casting. I have not preference to modern or old motor but modern are easily available.

1hp should be fine. The welding room in work has a linisher with a 600w motor on it and that works fine. Bearing in mind 1hp is around 750w

What sort of access have you got through the bottom of the pedestal if any?

if its a 4inch wide linisher a half hp motor will be powerfull enough if its a 6inch a 3/4 or a 1hp will be ok if u cant get the motor in get some angle iron and replace the existing mounting bracket and move the linisher back and mount the motor at the back of the pedestal below linisher heres mine that i made

I have uploaded a couple more pics. I would like to keep things tidy if I can as I have limited space. If I can
get a motor that will fit inside the housing then great. The four threaded holes would be where the mounting plate
would go (mounted inside the housing). The access is 25 cm x 31cm and narrows. Whist I have mentioned single phase are their any real benefits in going the inverter route as I do have 3 phase 1/2 hp motor (dual voltage), appreciate the benefits on
other machine tools.

Nice mod their - Mine says Bandfacer 4 on the front (which is the width of the rollers) so 4 inch I am guessing. I have tried the
mounting plate from a Brooks Gryphon MK11 and that fits, so might be able to use that.

Rule of thumb for grinders and linishers if you really want to press on them is 1hp per 2" of belt width but just for shining and shaping small pieces 1hp should be plenty.

the size motor originaly fitted on the 4inch is 1/2hp and is well capable on power. the only thing that happens is the belts slip when u force the job down the 6inch was fitted with a 3/4hp motor and same again the pully on the drive roller is only small and will slip before motor is pulled down

You might want to by the motor from these people, as they sell more reliable motors and the price is only slightly higher.

That's really helpful, I plan to build a linisher/belt grinder once I can acquire a lathe to make the wheels so ill bear that in mind.

Thanks for all the comments, very useful. Any recommendation for a on line abrasive belt supplier. Most of my work will
be on mild steel so was thinking Ali Oxide would be ok. Thanks Steve
