I've been paying this every year for ever on our cars, this year a called Direct Line and asked why I have to pay it on two cars, they said "that's just the way it is", I said that's just like taking out two life insurance policies when only one will pay out" they had no answer. As my policy costs seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper, the MLP is now getting to be a fair portion of the total.

I wish I had thought about this before, what a rip off it is. This year I plan to take out a single policy covering all our cars and all drivers in the household for £25 with one of the independent providers.

I haven't had motor legal protection for years, ever since someone drove into me while I was on my bike and my provided solicitor mandated I accept 50% liability because "if you weren't there on a bike it wouldn't have happened"...

Never again.

That's a joke! Right! That's like saying it's half your fault you were broken into and robbed because if you didn't have a house it would not of happened.
Sometimes I do wonder why solicitors get paid such amounts when they speak so much tosh.

I had legal protection on my bike policy when I was hit by a car. Policy covered all expenses. Luckily mine was a text book case so other party had no argument with pleading guilty in court case and therefore liability so his insurers had to pay out - including £37,000 legal bill. That's right £37,000 Without legal protection I'd have been snookered as no way could I risk that amount of legal costs to fight the case.
My solicitor had to sue insurance company for payment of their fees thought.

I wouldn't go without some kind of legal protection cover.I've had a couple of non fault accidents over the years, all have successfully been resolved by the cover.Hate to think of the hassle and cost if I didn't have it.

It's The Insurance Industry's version of PPI.

They wanted 35quid off my lad for his ped a few yrs ago, Our lass was not happy when I refused to pay it.

Fortnight later he gets t-boned at a junction in town. Got in touch with his Insurers and despite only having Third Party, they sent him a new helmet and the loan of a bike while his was taken by and assessed. He had the bike for a month. And told to keep the lid. Meanwhile appointed Solicitors were arranging Medicals, photographs.

Got paid out, for bike, helmet/clothes and £4.5k damages for the injuries and whiplash etc.




The only thing that peeved me a bit was the appointed Solicitors. They tried to get me to use my home insurance (or any other I had for that matter) to indemnify them against losing the case. I told them to stump the cost if they wanted the case.

I had this once or twice but got rid of it, I did get hit at a junction by some woman obviously not paying attention I had stopped and she ran into the back of me, I just used a no win no fee solicitor and sued her, got the cash for the car as I didn't want it going to a accident repair shop, I did it myself and did quite well out of it

There csn be some cases where motor legal protection can be useful, normally if it is a simple accident and both parties have insurance cover it should be easy to resolve, the problem is when both sides deny liability or one of the parties has an indemnity problem.

Originally the legal department of my insurer wanted me to accept £1200. I refused and found I could choose who dealt with my case so opted for a specialist in motorcycle accidents by reputation. In the end it was entered in court as a claim for £250,000 and the other parties insurers bent over themselves at 11th hour to get me to accept an out of court amount. Barrister alone charged something like £10,000 yet didn't have to argue in court. Yes disgusting amounts of money but the accident left me with life changing injuries so I had to retire from work on a pension a lot lower than salary, left with permanent disabilities, expect to die earlier than normal, spend most of my life in bed with now very few period of being active, etc.
If I hadn't the legal protection then I would have had to accept the £1200 as there was no such thing as "no win no fee" back when my accident happened 20 years ago.
BTW I accepted an out of court amount enough to pay off mortgage, buy a good used automatic car as couldn't drive manual, pay off debts accrued (overdraft alone was £16,000) due to not working so net result was I was financially clear enough to survive on the small pension with very little actual "cash in my pocket". It took 6 years from accident until finally settled

There are also cases where no win no fee will probably not take on the case such as where a driver has no insurance but there is an insurance company that will have to cover the claim. They can be complex cases and time consuming

people should be well compensated when their life is in ruins and will remain that way and given that people have decades in front of them in that state its not disgusting amounts of money, its only the fakers that should get nothing genuine people deserve a decent amount to see them through life and the challenges they will encounter
