motor for small horizontal milling machine

Anyone any idea what size motor (was thinking 1/2 hp) I should be using on this milling machine? Also what shaft speeds should I be looking at?
Got a bit sick of milling on my small lathe, so managed to get hold of this (without motor)

...should be able to take bigger cuts hopefully!

3/4 or 1hp would be even better and motor rpm 1400 ish .what taper is on the shaft as u could take that one out and fit a collet chuck to fit end mills u can use an angle plate or a tilting vice on the bed

Thanks bright spark... maybe when aldi get their little table saws in for 29.99 I should get one and use both the motor and the nvr switch..any other ideas for a motor? The postage usually makes ebay motors not viable!

a half hp would get u away. heres a horizontal mill with the collet chuck fitted for end milling

Don't think you'll need much more than a 1hp for that little cutie. Looks like someone has had a go at 'modernising' it once already. I bet it came with cone pulleys originally. What make is it?

Yeah thats like on my lathe... im going to get set up like that on my mill too... Mill has a 2mt taper , so will use an er25 collet set to hold 10mm end mills, I already have a 1mt er25 sets up for my lathe, but will get a 2mt holder for extra stiffness, and use collets I already have.

I had something similar. Does the arbor have a key or is the milling cutter just held in by friction? Mine was just friction and it ran on a 1/3 hp motor, which would trip before the cutter slipped. I doubt that was designed for more than that really, putting a bigger motor on might well start all sorts of flex and other problems imho.

Yes Julian, mine has a keyway, its full length of arbour, I think keys just the width of the cutter are to be used so that the spacers, which dont have keyways, can fit on the shaft...to be honest its 35yrs since ive used a milling machine so it will be a steep learning curve for me!

A cheapy pillar drill will have a motor complete with stepped pulley, and an NVR switch. You can then use what's left over to make a wheel operated screwdriver

Usually for undoing the screws that secure dynamo yolks in place, as per the picture, but they're great where you have very tight screws and you need to exert downward pressure whilst turning the screw.
