I'd appreciate some advice please. This will be my first welding job on the car and was wondering about how to go about arranging the patches.
Its in the rear wheel arch, the pic below shows the rust patch just above the rear axle:
This next pic gives a bit more detail, you can see that essentially there are two different panels that have rusted, the outer one is simply body skin, very thin and easy to patch, but the inner one is more chassis related, about 1mm thick, maybe a little bit more.
To gain access to the inside face would involve removing the rear axle, so i'd want to avoid that if possible. I was thinking along the lines of seam welding a square plate over the chassis item, and then covering this with another plate, again seam welded, over the bodywork, all welding to take place on the outside, as facing the camera.
When i had a breif chat with the Mot chap, he just said that it needs a small patch in the arch, I couldn't see the area at the time because it was hidden behind the wheel, so didn't question him further.

Cut all the rotten metal out from the wheelarch side, clean up the ends of the crossmember, then plug weld whatever you weld back onto that. I can't see much advantage of welding from behind.
