I used to have one of these on the rear of my Mini van 'back in the day', controlled by a manual pull switch below the dash - no excuse for not seeing behind you.....

Found a pic of the ones I had fitted to the top of the RR, normally had them angled to use as reversing lights in pitch black forests etc.
