MOT and lights

Just putting a new rear panel in the Mk1 Escort (1976) and need to be clear on a couple of things. I am of the belief that cars first used pre April 1980 do NOT require Rear fog lamp, hazzard warning lights, reversing lights, side repeaters. Comments.

You don't need fog lamps or indicator repeaters, reverse lamps have never come under MOT, not sure about date for hazard lamps.

give your local test center a ring they will tell you all you need to know mate

1st April 1986 I believe is the date after which hazard lights became an MOT issue. If they are fitted, they are tested, whatever the age of the vehicle.

This inspection applies to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980.

Hazard warning devices are not required on vehicles first used before 1 April 1986, but if one is fitted it must be tested

Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must be fitted with one side repeater indicator on each side. Instead of a separate lamp, the side repeater might be part of the front direction indicator if it includes a wraparound lens

and as said reversing lamps are not included

in view of the above will you be fitting a fog light ? it could save you putting yet another rear panel on after some idiot rear ends you on a foggy day

No the guy i'm restoring it for will only use it on sunny clear days and wants to keep it very uncluttered. He is a boy born of the 80s not 50s so we dont see eye to eye on the 'classic escort ' look....... Its going to be quite a piece of kit when its finished and will not be shown any dangerous or injurious situations albeit he wants me to drive it on a track day session.

Its only going to be a lightly tuned Pinto and type 9 but it will be fun to re visit my RWD rally days.

My grey import came with a separate "bolt on" foglight which I ditched and rewired so it was part of the rear light clusters next to the brake lights. Now, technically they're supposed to have 100mm space between foglight and brake light emitting surfaces but they are immediately adjacent on mine. So it would fail an SVA test but MOT is absolutely fine as they just check operation. MOT rules are a strange thing...

Yeh but

Yeh but at £20k plus for a bdx or £25k for a millington lump, £2500 for the s2000 from a breakers is a BIG difference plus it'll rev all day at 9500 and not need a rebuild every 6 mths !!! . Plus it still gives 250 ish bhp normally asperated fun, not to mention the wettish patch in ya skiddies.
