MOT Advisory

Just a query, Not for myself, but a friend, He got an advisory notice at his last MOT, And is due for another MOT soon, Its a car that gets very little use, and nothing has changed, Will it be an automatic fail this year or just another advisory notice? As far as I understand it was to do with a very slight leak on one of the shockers.

sometimes you get a less picky tester and they dont mention it

id give it a wipe with a rag

Don't make it too clean though or they get suspicious and start poking round They might pick up on it or totally ignore it and find something else to advise on.

I had an advisorie on a rear brake disc on my bike being warped for oh about 8 years or more....
Only changed it last year as it was getting on my nerves.

its probable that the shocker got worse. Advisories are not taken into consideration when they do a new test

I had an advisory last year 'rear pads getting thin'.

I took their word for it and ordered a new pair, when I took the old one's out I reckoned they were only 25% down and had loads of life left.

I was super busy at the time so never got round to going back to complain.

As mentioned a previous advisory does not mean a fail but many garages will fetch up the previous MOT result and perhaps pay a bit more attention to anything highlighted.

I tend to ignore advisories. Ive had advisories for covers obscuring parts and then with a different tester thats not on the next one but the covers are still there.

Previous advisory on the Freelander was front to rear brake pipes, failed on next years mot, I'm pretty sure they checked as I cleaned them up a few days before

Before I owned it my BMW had an advisory on rear brake pipes for three years! Soon as I bought it I did them and I kid you not the things split in two as soon as I touched them.

A tester once asked me about a damp patch on my front shock absorber which I pointed out was wax oil overspray which he was happy with, he said he couldn’t have failed it anyway just for a leaking shock.

My truck commonly gets
cuts in tyres,
External roll cage fitted.
And some times a few other funny ones...
Once got roll bar in window but not obstructing view

the advisories could have been repaire at anytime in the last 6 months. just because they were there at the last mot doesn't mean that the will be there at the next. Its a possiblity but not a certainty

Either it's changed since then or he was wrong...

Leaking shock is a fail - insufficient damping (i.e. no oil left) can be advisory.

I have no desire to argue but the wording in the manual it’s quite clear. It would need to be a leak serious enough to indicate that it was duff not just wet / mist as per my description of wax overspray. Have a read, it’s section 2.7

The mot bounce test was removed a while ago so whilst driving with a defective none damping shock absorber would be an offence there isn’t a test other than a visual inspection at the yearly test. ( or it was ‘obviously broke or missing’)

Whether I agree with that is of no consequence but I fix things like that regardless. In this case it was a 3 day old B4 and I’d have been annoyed if it was even weeping.

Sometimes an advisory is added so it looks like they have been doing there job, not saying they all do it but I have had advisories that never were, didn't question them taken back next year and not a mention.

Tend to find if they tell you it's an advisory that needs doing then it does.

Wife's car gets the same advisory every single MOT test about plastic over sills preventing inspection of sills.

I used to work with a guy who did a lot of off-roading/trials so he'd covered the entire bottom of the car with skid plates so he always got a list of advisories a mile long about being unable to inspect XXX because of it being hidden behind XXX.

I have had advisories after a test, never got round to doing them. Next test they never got a mention. So not an automatic fail

for the last 2 years I had an advisory about a slightly noisy wheel bearing, this year it wasnt mentioned, and thats all been done by the same tester.
