morse taper tool holder

I've recently got a new lathe (new to me) and with it was a Dickson tool post with a couple of tool holders. One of the tool holders has a no 1 morse taper hole in it and i can't for the love of god think what it would be used for. Am i just having a blonde moment. the previous owner didn't know either as it's still wrapped in grease paper. can one of you lathe experts enlighten me

How would you drill and off centre hole in a lathe? Lathes depend on all drill holes being central to the axis of the lathe so you would would only ever need the tail stock to drill with.

Ah fair enough lol. I would say that a morse taper tool holder would be for either a homemade tool of belongs somewhere else but I may be wrong. Plenty of people here with more turning experi nice than me

TBH, I think it'd be used if you wanted to power drill or ream a deep hole. Less fussing about if you've a small lathe with limited travel in the tailstock.

It's definitely not home made it's still wrapped in the grease paper from new. i've looked at new tool posts and they also include a morse taper tool holder.

Boring bars. I have one in the drawer that came with my Myford and it also came with some rather nice Swizz made 1MT boring bars.

I have on occasions wished to machine something that's a peculiar shape and will not go in the chuck.
My solution, since I don't have a mill, is to clamp it to the top slide and put the MT tools in the chuck in an MT tool holder.

so does the taper hold it in with no drawbar. the toolholder has two dowel pins at the bottom of the taper that go each side of the tang.

You could use a faceplate with angle plate and clamping kit either, in the usual way.

Yes, in the same way it holds in the tailstock.

Good for power drilling/reaming. A coaxial indicator is a good tool to set it up.

Wonder if you could use it for light rotary broaching? Use one of those rotating/live tailstock chucks with a Morse taper, but in the toolholder, and dial in the 1° angle at the toolpost.

That's an interesting idea

I have one too and I assumed it was for morse taper drill bits, of which I have many. Would be nice to find some morse fitting boring bars but usually I would keep the boring bar as short as possible whereas with a morse toolpost fitting, you'd be stuck with the maximum length of the bar always. Maybe there are some other morse taper fitting tools, like knurling attachments. But yes, it might come in handy to fit a chuck on the toolpost sometimes.

Actually, come to think of it, might come in handy for fitting a reamer but the fact that the toolpost can easily be off centre makes using any centering tool rather fraught!

can't think of anything it could be used for other than small boring bars but i would rather have a boring bar in a holder than on a taper. one of those things that sit on the shelf for ever so you can look at it and scratch your head now and then

I have several of the morse taper socket T2 sized Dickson holders I've acquired over the years, and I have to say they're not the most useful holder in the set ! Being T2 the socket is No 2 Morse so presumably yours are T3 or smaller?

The most useful thing I did with one of them was to bore it out and make a Ball Turner based on it . Looking at the pictures it seems that was in 2004!
