More tyre repair questions

I carried a tyre repair kit while riding bikes years ago but never used it & until I read the comments on the previous thread, I'd never considered them as anything other than a temporary fix.
Now I'm looking to DIY & I've a few newb questions.
- Recommendations for kits gratefully received - budget will be an issue.
- What's the deal with different length strings? Can't imagine ever needing 8" on my van tyres but it's an unknown unknown?
- Does the adhesive last or if you stick a kit in the boot do you find that the components have gone off?
Any tips on use, things that did & didn't work please.

I've carried kits for getting on for 10yrs, probably done 6 or 7 repairs in that time usually on 4x4s that get used on and off road

Kits were no name jobbies off eBay and just worked, I did keep them I'm a zip lock bag though

8" strings are probably OK for tractor tyres, but 4" will be fine for ordinary vehicle tyres.

Based on experience with bicycle puncture repair kits, once the metal seal on the glue is broken, it will start to go off slowly, because of solvent evaporation, but would probably be OK for months after opening. I bought a pack of half a dozen or so tubes of glue to keep as spares.

When estimating numbers of repairs for the other thread (link below), the figure I used for how many repairs I've done with strings, I guessed at having done about 6 repairs myself. Now, thinking back how many replacement strings I've bought over the years, the number of repairs must be closer to 20. It's hedge-cutting season now, so punctures are going to happen. Blackthorn can be vicious to tyres!!

the glue goes off if its been opened and in a tin. best buy small tubes of ebay get about 4 for a few quid and last years unopened 4 inch strings are ok most is cut off anyhow once in
