More rot than I thought.

Hi guys.have finished stripping the front end of my saxo rally/race project...revealing rot in the usual places...but a bit more than I first predicted..inner wings are shot..top mounts are going underneath.. front main rails are good.and the A pillar to inner wing supports are lightly rusted but OK...I can get new inner wings but am half tempted to make them.....

I used to weld BMC and Fords from the 1970 models, there was nothing solid between the front bumper and the back one..the day's when men were men grrrrrrrrrrr

seen a lot worse than that still on the road none of that would fail a MOT test that's in good condition
cut out any bit's that are bad most of that seems to be rust between the seams

yep if they are shot you've not worked on many cars that's in great condition to most ive welded

I can buy new factory inner wings..but they are so thin.

Cut the spot welded flanges out and fully weld the joint. Two birds one stone.

I here you guys...my main concern is even thoe some parts are good. The time I have cut out the bad.there not going to be a great deal left. Hence my thoughts on replacement of both inner wings..

get it shot blasted if you can, you'll soon see what's needed, then epoxy straight away to stop rust forming again

Yes.. I am talking worse can scenario..it's that awful rubber kind of underseal they use...moisture gets in and rots inside out..horrible stuff to remove.

Most of that will wire brush of from the look of it, some light media blast would tidy it up and let you see what really needs doing. Once it's got primer on it will look like a different motor.

Admit I haven't took a wire wheel to it yet.it was only a visual....

Only to be expected with French cars it's all down to the corrodium they add to the steel, for those of a certain age memories of the Renault Dauphine splitting in two at the rear come to mind.

OK...I kind of jumped the gun a little on my first post...most of it is surface rust and not corrosion...two of the seams are the worst. I will remove both of these and replace with fresh material....just a couple of mounting brackets that I will make..

After a deeper examination under the top mounts all doesn't seem to bad...only thing that concerns me is the rusty that has bubbled under the horrible sealer they use.

Just a muse, do car manafacturers test their offerings for rust protection? Perhaps tests in a salt solution would identify where a car is most likely to rust & then the manafacturers could take extra measures in those areas. Like I said just a muse in the real world suppose there's no incentive to make them last longer perhaps just the opposite. Ah well, Back to reality.

Not at all..I appreciate all comments and opinions. I am not a panel beater /fabricator. But I am considering replacing both inner wings and strengthening up the engine mounting supports. Am looking at doing the maxi style inner arches.
