more problems with welder..well probably me

I was welding away on Friday, been going for hour or 2, just 3 or 4 inch welds in 6mm steel when suddenly the crackling nose speed and it turned more to a hissing nose. The weld looked like it had yellow flames on it and just felt wrong.
When i stopped there was a lot of black soot around the weld.

I'd changed nothing, it was mid weld and now seems to happen randomly. The liner is around 6 months old, brand new tip/ shroud.
.8mm wire..
Now and again the wire seems to catch a little but i don't know if the spool is catching or rollers aren't pulling it through right and don't know how to test which it is.
Any ideas gents?

Base metal contamination (Primer, or zinc coated??) or poor gas shield (drafty area ??) Also might try push angle , not lag angle on your gun when tacking. Try also turning up your gas a bit more

With the wire catching have you checked that the Tip is clear, sometime a bit of spatter causes this, or it could be your liner?? Easy way to chest is to turn welder off, disconnect the wire feeder and see if you can move back and forth the wire where it comes out from the tip, you will be able to feel any issues with sticky wire etc..

The metal I'm using can be seen in my settings thread. Its new steel that i give a very quick run over with wire brush or grinder.
Gas is set at around 12 with trigger pulled.
I replaced the tip the first time it did it and an using tip dip now and again.
I mentioned the liner and boss said it was all renewed a couple of months before i got there and had done hardly any work. It seems like all problems have started since the new roll of wire has been put on. Can i have messed something up putting a new spool on? Wire is in guids, is the right size and in right guide.

Badly wound wire will cause all sorts of feed problems, try another reel.

I mentioned the liner and boss said it was all renewed a couple of months before i got there and had done hardly any work.

My impression from your other threads is that no body there before, knew their **** from their elbow or cared about welding and the likelyhood of them changing a liner is slim. Call me sceptical but it may be a fob off.

Haha, being honest i sort of thought that myself. I'll try a new roll, the last one was no problems, add i said, its all since i changed the roll.
Rollers weren't adjusted at all but it struggles to send wire through now .

I once had all sorts of problems with the last 1/3 of a 5kg roll of SIP wire stopping and starting, burning back etc. It was driving me mad.
Watched the reel as I held the trigger and could see the turns snagging.
Put a fresh roll on and ran the entire lot through without an issue.
