More car woes

Last Thursday my lad bought a used car from an independent dealer
2017 audi a 3.
Paid in full debit card Thurs to pick up Sat
Saturday he tried to tax it before going to get it and its not recognised on tax site phone the dealer, they say there has been a mix up on the registration they have not received it yet from the previous one owner the main dealer but it will be done Monday Monday and today pass they still haven't done it we ask again to explain the problem in more detail they say its on an Irish plate so needs to be reregistered.
Alarm bells are ringing with me.
I asked trading standards, they say he can reject the purchase as not fit for purpose.

Any thoughts?

Could just be on a private reg maybe? My sister has a private reg number that originated from Ireland on her UK car.

It's not a private reg just an Irish plate to be honest I didn't notice and they didn't mention it at the time .

I am just worried now that something dodgy is going on .
I asked trading standards today if he's able to get a refund.. yes in thier opinion, he can use reject of purchase as its not fit for purpose as he cannot drive the car he bought .
I don't know if there are any negative issues with buying an Irish plated car do feel we were misled although we should have spotted the obvious...

Is it northern Ireland or republic reg ? If it were republic you could be hit with tax i am nearly sure. I seen a woman near us being swooped on and arrested over driving a uk reg car here for nearly a year, car seized and all that.

Reckon you are alright then, its all UK after all, but you would think it would be all on the one system, dvla etc.

I had a van on an Irish plate no problems but it had not come from Ireland it had the plate swapped from an English one. Had your car been imported?

You should be able to tax the car on its NI reg no using the new keeper section of the V5.

If it's on a NI reg there should be no problem transferring it. You can drive the car anywhere in the UK on the original NI reg, you definitely don't need to re-register it, the dealer is talking rubbish! If you want to you can get a local registration plate put on the car, if I buy a car with an English reg no I can apply to get a local NI reg no on it.

The UK car registrations now all work from Swansea. The transfer of ownership should be no different than if you bought an English reg car. If you are certain the previous owner isn't holding on to their reg no maybe the dealer wants to keep the number for themselves to sell on, NI reg nos can be valuable. That will take a bit longer as the NI reg no will be need to be either put on another car or a retention certificate then you will be issued a new local reg no.

Get back to the dealer, I believe the car is still with them, no ? Ask for a refund or all registration papers to be issued otherwise it sounds like they gave you another car reg instead ! It could be that the reg is put on a retention certificate and they are waiting on the new reg to go on, if they’ve sold you the car without mentioning the new reg change and you signed the new keeper part of the logbook then the car WiTH the new reg is yours !
Also ask for all taxi/fares expenses you might have incured during the trips and make sure they include some freebies as well to sweeten the pain !

If it is on a NI reg it will need to be re-registered over here - the registration can stay the same, or you can choose to be allocated a new number - but you do have to fill in a form with the DVLA either way and wait for them to issue a new logbook - at least that certainly was the case a few years ago.

He has also rung to say the logbook has arrived and given the new plate as mx17nde. I have been able to check this reg on the DVLA tax website so it exists. However I cannot do an HPI check since it has just been added to the system and it needs time to update. However would I really want to do one since this plate is new?'

would you need to do an hpi cheak as your buying from a dealer and a newer car thats there problem is it not ?

if it turns out to be stolen/written off they should have cheaked that before selling

if you are after the protection of the HPI check then I think you will find their terms exclude protection if you have already bought it (possibly even paid a deposit)

all sorts of caveats and disclaimers in their terms like not paying more than a certain percentage in cash (how many people have historically used cash for the deposit at least)

It sounds like somebody in the chain has held onto the original NI reg, probably to sell it on. They have no date letter in the reg no so you cannot tell the age of a car by the reg no. This makes them a popular buy for people who want to hide their cars age & some can be quite valuable.

I would imagine you will need to know the original reg of the car to do a HPI check. It will be on the new V5 when you get it but it will be too late by then!
