Hello all,

does anyone have any experience of this tool for rust removal?
I want to clean up the very rusty underside of a car I'm restoring and this tool sounds promising, except for it's near £600 cost?
Employing a mobile blast cleaner is another option but a messy process, as is chemical cleaning.

If you are a cheap skate like me you can make one out of cheaper bits.

Hardest part to make was the hub and these are £26 odd so not worth the bother, but I do like a challenge.
The industrial and the automotive use different hubs and belts.
I think the industrial is the better tool, but I've no experience of the automotive one so can't be sure.
I know they are different because I bought an automotive hub and it didn’t fit.
Be careful of edges and holes in thin sheet metal as the tool can trash them very easily. On flat panels it works very well.

It's worth keeping an eye out for them as the do come up and ebay was the best place I found for belts.
@hotponyshoes had a couple availible a while ago I think.
Also I think @rcx132 has a version.

I’ve got one - bought as a present after a bit of discussion on here. I’ve only had a chance to try it on some rust along the bottom of a door and it seemed to do what it says on the tin. Main thing I wanted it for was the underside of my project but haven’t tried yet.

£600, wow, really gone up in price, I paid £350 for the MBX air one. There was a Chinese version available for £200 back then as well.

It's a useful tool but very over priced. I was going to sell mine but it still comes in useful just often enough to keep it. Don't forget to price in the bristles, you need to buy them in boxes of five as single ones are silly expensive. Only the black bristles work, the other ones are good for nothing.

Last time this came up I did buy a load of the stuff. Had to buy carton quantities of everything to get any discount from them.
I was/am planning to make up some kits up but I just haven't got around to it.
I have got half a dozen of the tools themselves and a few hundred belts and some of the various accessories so shout if you want one!

The bristle blaster is really good for removing underseal and seam sealer and stuff like that which would just clog up any of the other wheel type options.
It also strips rust like a weapon but the best thing is the shot blasted type finish it leaves as it gives a really good grip for paint/stonechip/underseal.

They are a bit aggressive though, fine for floorpans, chassis rails, cross members and stuff but if you try using them on something like a fuel filter bracket they can grab and you will either end up with a bent bracket or a dent in the floor where the tool has been snatched forward into it. Or both!

The brushes are pretty flexible so work nicely on external corners and you can get narrow ones for tight internal corners.
It's still a fairly large tool though so access can be an issue and a die grinder with one of the above options (or some manual labour) would probably also be needed to do the whole underside of a car.

The automotive version is smaller and lighter so better if you have to hold it overhead for any period of time.
They don't do the extraction shield for the automotive one though. Although they do do the toffee wheels for removing stickers for the automotive version.

I had one but didn't use it much (might have sold it to someone on the forum), I think the air ones use a lot of air :- just checked 17cfm.

Hello all,

thanks for all the answers; I do appreciate that one tool will never do 100% of what is required but if it does 90% that's acceptable, and I think it would.
I wasn't aware of the smaller cheaper version, less power but I assume will give the same result only slower? I'll ask the supplier for more information after the holiday.
