My 16/108
I’ve also got a 60 series monarch which is a lump
The earlier monarchs pictured are advanced for a 1930’s design
My 1950’s 60 series is well built but old fashioned and tiny spindle bore is a pita. And the multiple gear change levers are tedious compared compared to a equivalent era lathe
There must have been a fair amount of monarch lathes imported during the war years.
I’ve only ever seen one Axelson
Hendey were the best of all of them , not many left unfortunately
Pre war according to old magazines I own lodge and Shipley lathes and Pratt and Whitney were very popular.
During the early twentieth century the septics were racing ahead
I think I know that 60. Viewed it a while back. Pretty quiet, but I'd have needed to selling something equally lovely to have it, so passed. I missed a 16 dpeed hrndey for pennies a few years bsck. Regretted it since. Not so sure if they are the best, though.. i like all the levers on the old stuff..
How do they compare with CVA, Smart and Brown or Holbrook?
I've owned all of these and find Holbrook just edges them for quality and beats them hands down for features. Never had a Hendey or even touched one.
