Molasses

Anyone used diluted molasses solution to remove rust from stuff.

Appears you have to fully immerse for a week or two.

Seems too cheap to be true, a gallon from the farm shop costs £6.00 so to make up a solution at 9 parts water to 1 of molasses gives a lot of mixture.

Also I guess it is easy to dispose of being organic.

Anyone had any experience?

Sounds a lot like the "soak it in Coke" trick.
Never heard anyone having good results with that and Coca Cola contains lots of molasses.

Some kind of sugar syrup maybe???

Can't remember the last time I saw any of it in Morrisons!

Hi,

some time ago there was someone on TV demonstrating various products to clean the outside bases of copper pans, ie, to clean the burnt bit where it sits on a gas hob.

Almost anything seems to work but products like tomato sauce, brown sauce, mustard, tomato soup, etc, will get most things clean if you spread it on and leave it for a couple of hours. It just washes off in normal soap & water.

according to its wiki some molasses contains oxalic acid which might help passivate the steel but it has to be sugar beet molasses.

Holy cow, oxalic acid is pretty poisonous. Think I'll stick to hydrochloric! (And avoid anything with molasses on the label!)

I’ve heard of it being used to free rusted parts

seems to work well when used in warm climates (Australia)

you may need a little heat to in colder parts of the world
