mobile phones & grinding

after grinding away at a car today my mobile started ringing and sounded terrible so i took it to pieces and discovered tiny fragments of steel stuck to the speakers via the magnet .
so if you have a mobile in your pocket when grinding you may want to protect it, saves taking the phone to pieces later.

I've ruined more phones than I care to remember with grinding dust, it gets it the microphone as well, someone once said it made me sound like a dalek, those self sealing plastic bags are handy to keep the dust out,

I go through 3 to 4 phones a year because of this - the one i have at the moment has a leather case - the metal fragments stick in a circle patten on the outside of the case, and hey presto, fall off when i take the phone out.
A sharp slap on your palm tends to knock most of the rubbish out of the vents/little slots on them.

I had one of those rubbery Nokia phones a while back, that was quite resilient, but grinding dust killed that one as well eventually.

Some of the lads i work with use kids socks to keep them in. Muffles the sound of it ringing i would have thought

i think its a platic bag for me i usually leave the phone away from whetever im doing i guess it only takes one time to forget

The old nokias were the worst for that.
I have on some when possible remove the case, and put a bit of insulation tape over the speaker and mic. Didnt seem to affect volume hardly either.
I dont bother keeping it in my pocket anymore though.
I had one of them dustproof Nokias for a bit, was alright, but seriously out dated now.
I think theres a few IP rated phones about now, even JCB do one i think!

It doesn't seem to matter how hard you try to keep grinding dust out of your phone, it always seems to get in there in the end, I reckon I'm going through at least three phones a year because of it.

Arrrrr so thats why my phone sounds dodgy since i was grinding the other day ohh well good excuse for a new one i guess

You can remove the dust by opening-up the phone and using blu-tak to clean the speakers. The iron dust pulls the speaker bubble down onto the magnet and stops it from transmitting sound.

A good way to protect your phones from iron dust is to pop it into one of those cloth pouches you get with safety-specs with the little draw-string to close the top. You can still answer the phone and talk with it in the pouch and the dust can't get through.

We were given Nokia's in the maintenance dept, they suffered from grinding / welding dust etc so they gave use some "armoured" Samsung, found out the display wasn't very tough when I leant on something and broke the screen!
