Mk7 Transit clutch & revs when idle

Morning all,

I wonder if any mechanics on here can shes some light on the issue I have with my van??

When sitting in neutral and the engine idling all is wells around 800rpm, but when I press the clutch the engine revs raise to 1000rpm.

The van drives great although the gears are a little stiff to engage but nothing I would think is concerning (just yet)!

Any guidance please?

Does it have anti-stall? It's possibly sensing a change in engine load and upping the revs.

Just found this, same issue. Looks like Ford added the anti stall via a software update fairly early on.

Looking at everyone’s response maybe I do have anti stall, however I’ve managed to stall a good few times!

With all the delivery drivers I've seen I thought Transits had to be doing 3000rpm to pull away.

The Luton van we just hired had it but perfectly able to stall it.

Problem I've found with all modern Ford diesel lumps I've driven is that they seem to be pants on bottom end torque (at least without supercharging trickery). The minibuses I used to drive at Uni were all transits and we could stall those in 5th gear at 30mph by putting your foot down.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's all driven by reducing emissions. In order to reduce emissions means they want to save weight which means reducing the engine weight. Most of the engine weight in a diesel will come from the crank and block. Reducing the weight of the block usually means reducing the overall strength which means an inherently lower compression ratio which I think relates to engine torque. Similarly a longer throw crank which improves bottom end grunt means increased friction means reduced efficiency overall.

Whilst I've found the transits and their engines to be quite driveable and enjoyable I've always felt their engines drive more like petrols than a good old fashioned diesel. The minibuses and a friend's 2.4Tdci Defender I've always found I've needed to rev the nuts off (comparatively speaking) to pull off compared to my ancient old 300Tdi tractor engine.

My van drives lovely, it didnt miss a beat when i went to Scotland last week but as you say, it seems to not like low revs and setting off speeds. Admittedly, there is plenty of weight in the back but ive always been around Sprinters, this is my first transit and as comfy as it is i still crunch gears and stall it unlike the smoothness of a Sprinter

Transits should have solenoid throttles On or Off.....simples...
