Mitutoyo and rice

Put my caliper down and when I went to get it found I had flooded it with coolant! No display at all and clearly had water under the cover on the display.
I pulled the battery out and stuffed it in poly bag of Basmati. Couple of days later I put the battery back and it works just as good as before.

I've heard about the rice trick before, but never really took it seriously! Shame it didn't work on the GF's iPhone that went for a swim in the toilet!

Done that loads of times wrecked two Mitutoyos and 4 scales.
You will only be able to do it a few times then have to fork out for an IP66 or IP67 jobby
Had an IP66 Mitutoyo when they first came out, prices have since dropped. Wish they would make em out of rubber though.

Thanks graffian I'll remember that. I only have analogue callipers, but it must work for other digital things too.

I just put mine on top of the boiler to dry out and it came back alright. Does it have to be Basmati or can you use Bachelor's long grain?

A far better substance to use would be Silica Gel. A good place to get then FOC is your friendly Chemist, they come in little tubs about 10mm Dia x 10mm high, in the large tubs on tablets, some even change colour when spent. When this happens just pop them in the oven for a few hours at 80c and it will dry them out ready to go.

The rice will probably taste fine, hint of Hysol maybe.
I do have a tub of silica gel, rice was probably cheaper though[I was going to try making a desiccant filter].
The calipers had a single drop of coolant land on them[maybe five years ago] instantly the water appeared under the display and one side of the first digit and the decimal point went out, they have never reappeared; can you buy new digits;-)

I will keep my eye open for a IP67 caliper, but the Mitutoyo will hopefully keep going.

I was talking to someone who had worked on avionics and instruments for Mullard[?], I asked about water logged instruments, He told me to remove power immediately and chuck it in dewatering fluid[WD40 will do].

Most reels of mig wire seem to have a decent sized pack of silica gel in them....on a random tangent, our science teacher told us silica gel can cause severe nose bleeds, should you happen to get a quantity of it up ones nose.

Dont know about Bachelors but Ambrosia probably wont work but it will take away the pain

Ran out of crack one day ? ... so resorted to snorted rice ," Which was not very nice " . But it did ring his bell ,when he tried silica gel.
