Properly known as ductless mini-split heat pump. They seem much easier to install and work far better than a heatpump connected to radiators. Also has the massive benefit of air conditioning in hot weather. Why aren't they more popular in the UK? I have never seen grants for this type. I would have thought the much cheaper installation costs would be a huge win?

Installed one in the upstairs bedroom of the chalet bungalow extension I built. It used to regularly get up to 30 Degrees in the summer. Also good to warm it up when not using the CH.
I like them.
I am not in favour of heatpumps either but if they are going to force them on people why not this type instead? I was thinking of them for my place in Portugal.

a few that I knew that fitted the trad heat pump were vvvvv/disapointed...
Not sure how long ur winters are in Portugal but ours can be anything from 4 -12 weeks.......
we have a wood fired boiler that does the heating and the hot water.....
reg summer temps over 36 with no air con in the house........
it's all about light management and thru ventilation.......
no idea how much elec ur units suck up but it aint gonna get any cheaper....

gas boilers (or oil) also work very well in well insulated houses.
My view is that heat pumps are mistakenly thought to be efficient. This is because people look at the electrical units consumed. What they forget is it takes several times that electrical unit at the heat pump in fuel at the power station. (Physics, maximum possible efficiency cannot reach 100%)
Looked at in that perspective, I believe gas boilers are more efficient. With a gas boiler the fuel is used directly to heat the water, but with a heat pump the gas used at the power station runs a gas turbine and a steam turbine (Combined cycle gas turbines), transformed, transmitted then transformed again and distributed in the local are network, with significant losses from fuel to home heating.

There's no grants on A-A heat pumps because they can be used to air condition. Which the powers that be deem to be an energy hungry frivolity that should not be subsidised.

Nuclear yes, but that throws the timetable way off. We'd need about another twent Hinkley points.
We haven't the geograpghy for large scale hydro, I think the current hydro capacity in the U.K. is about two to three gigawatts. (Maximum grid demand is currently about 45 gigawatts, add all the evs and heat pumps the politicians want, nearer sixty gigawatts)
Wind and solar cannot work without either gas or large scale nuclear in which case we don't need wind and solar. Solar is a joke in the U.K., it only works for about eight months of the year to any extent.

Indeed, solar in the winter is a useless joke. But, it works well in summer to heat water, unless someone has talked you into binning the hot water cylinder..
Certainly cheaper than a battery
