Mini help needed.

A mate of mine has bought himself a bargain runaround, a Riley Elf. the funky mini with fins and a grill.
Theoretically it needed a bit of tidying.
Then the list started, short at first then it longer and longer.
Then the clutch needed doing, now the crank is bent.

At first it was quite funny. Now I feel sorry for the sucker.

Anybody know where he can get a reconditioned engine, somewhere reliable. I think he said 1150 or something around there.

I suppose it is a big mini disaster without that being an oxymoron.

I'm about 90% certain they ran the A+ series engine, i think these were mainly found in the mid 80's metros. I know they were in Minis at some point but cant remember when.

Yep - Series A. They come in various sizes from 850 to 1075 (IIRC) and were fitted to all 'proper' minis, the early Mini Metros, the Rover Metro and Rover 100 were fitted with the K-Series.

I think I'm right in saying the A-series are all physically the same size, and if he's desperate a K-series can be made to fit, with quite a bit of messing about.

The Riley Motor Club might be a good starting point.

Is he sure, that is very, very rare, break yes but bent?

However any early mini engine as has been said, I'm fairly sure the Elf and Hornet were 850cc.

K-series Elf sounds like fun. Proper classic with good performance and reliability too!

They were before the A+ engine but it will fit in place of the older 850cc A series. I never heard of one bending the crank before. The difference between the A and A+ is mainly that the early engines had a bypass hose at the back corner of the head and the later ones it is done away with and built into the head. Minisport Padiham in Lancs do a lot of bits.

They had the 998 cc A series engine also fitted to the rest of the mini range(and the rest of the mechanicals). They shared the same body shell with the Wolsley hornet apart from the front panel. Had leather seats and wood dashboard. The Elf had pockets either side with a flap on. Looked posh in its day. Early versions had the wishing wand gear lever where as later ones had the remote gearlever which was a solid tube from the gearbox under the car to almost the drivers seat. It helped steady the torque reaction when accelerating or slowing down. I had one as my first car, fond memories.

Cant see the crank being bent though. If you were local to me Id have a look for you. Ive got 3 of the little rusty ******s (minis not elfs altough I have owned one)

Can you give me the engine number and the number cast into the cylinder head under the rocker crosshaft . I can probably identify the engine exactly,

I saw him today, it was taken away to 'have the clutch done' and they have told him the crank is bent.
He is a bit like me in these matters, an idiot who at times has to trust people.
He bought it expecting a cosmetic overhaul to make a working vehicle, drove it a few miles and thought the clutch was out.
H ehas looked at forums and now needs somebody he might eb bale to trust for more info.
ie where can he supply a reliable motor.

Poor sausage, Oh, he is also Belgian.
