Milwaukee at Screwfix

Screwfix now claim to stock the full range of Milwaukee products. They are offering a complete drill driver kit at £199. I would love to have their stuff but can't justify the cost for hobby use so I will have to stick with my Keilder brushless tools which, so far, have been ok.

The only impact / drill combo set I can find at Screwfix is 299 not 199?

I would have gone down the Milwaukee route but bang for buck the the Dewalt gear is better value. All the major brands have their plus points and they are all world apart from where they were even 5 yrs a go so it's more about choosing the one one you want than buying the best one these days.

Twin pack Dewalt, impact driver and drill brushless with 2x 5ah batteries £289 and I'm sure there will places that are cheaper.

Possibly (?) im not comparing like for like? Is the FID2 a revised model, i wonder? Specs seem slightly different, but that may be down to rubbish websites.

Check out TOOLSTOP....they are usually quite a bit cheaper than SCREWFIX........Im a fan of Bosch Blue (never had a failure) but of late Ive bought 2 Makita Sanders and an Angle grinder and Im well impressed.......you can use them all day without tingly fingers and the velcro pad on the Sander shows no sign of failure....I actually bought a replacement as my previous experience is that they dont last long....this one has sanded maybe hundreds of scaffold boards.

You need to be careful with buying cordless tools from screwfix. They get manufacturers to build them a tool especially for them which they can sell for a cheaper price but they are a cheaper quality or lower spec tool. Other chain stores like homebase & B&Q do it as well.

Yes, I’ve seen some Makita stuff that had completely different batteries to the rest of the range sold by b and q, but that was a few years ago, I’d assumed it was aimed at the diy audience?

I think screwfix don’t seem to it as much (despite being owned by same parent group as b and q) - probably as they are aimed more at trade than the diy market. (Like they don’t sell Bosch “green” range aimed at the diy market)

My Makita gear is all LXT and some of it is brushless. The difference in quality of the stuff at Screwfix is quite big, plastic gearboxes, small ah batteries and that’s without looking at specifics of motors etc

Probably ok for DIY as it’s well made but wouldn’t risk it for how you earn a living

I've bought a few bits of Dewalt cordless from Screwfix when I upgraded my old stuff earlier this year. They were exactly the same models I was looking at online anyway and they were the same money and in stock so it was easier. All the stuff I bought (other than the 8 piece kit) was available as individual items in Screwfix with exactly the same model numbers.

I think they often have the deals on Dewalt and Makita almost as loss leaders to get people through the door but I'm sure those kind of things actually work these days, I would go there buy the drill and leave. I wouldn't then think while I'm here I may as well buy £200 worth plumbing stuff

All the brands seem to suffer with multiple model numbers for what appears to be the same thing, often it will be simple things like a kit number is different because it has 1.5 instead of 2.0 batteries or similar. When I was looking Milwaukee did seem have quite a difference in pricing IE one place would be way more than another and on their impact wrenches it seemed it wasn't always obvious if you were ordering the top spec one.

I know Karcher were big on the different model numbers for different outlets, B and Q machines never matched the ones Halfords sold and I can only assume it is to stop price wars.

A word of warning though should you be interested in any of the other M18 Milwaukee kit from Toolstation, almost all of it has the Brushed motor - I think there’s the M18CAG Grinder that’s Brushless and that’s it.

Good kit, but my Impact Driver is away being fixed under warranty due to a faulty direction sensor.

I was in screwfix the otherday, the milwaukee drill was brushless 18v, but it was the smaller one they do, with 4 ahr battery. A speacial offer, probably a bulk buy, head line pricing and all that.

Its popular gear, fashionable too, they will sell alot, they have to compete in the market too, as an internet outlet.

The dust bag is as much use as a chocolate tea pot, don't base any buying decisions on the included dust bag especially if you want to cut steel as the instructions warn against its use.

Its a very limited range of Milwaukee gear they have. None of the top spec models and its all way overpriced compared to other well established Milwaukee dealers.

I got two 5ah m18 batteries last week from my nearest local Milwaukee dealer - John H. McNae agricultural dealer - for £108inc VAT the same batteries from Screwfix are £79.99 each!

If you like Milwaukee gear then its best to shop about as you'll always get a good deal that will be cheaper than Screwfix.

With the Makita gear, the batteries won't swap between. It's like Bosch green & blue, I'd guess, but Makita use the same colour for both types.
