Milling on drill press

The steel only looks a 2-3mm thick - to take 2mm off that I would tempted to just offer them up to a belt sander.

Actually in places 2-3 thou on those ones! I've just got a new set from a very non- rusty environment which are like new underneath the crud. So these are the ones I need to slim down.

The sanding pad in the drill press looks like something I can do relatively easily. I will give that a go and report back.

I doubt whether it will work? for a start it will wear a groove into the sanding pad and if it does work you will go through x amont of sanding disc before you even done the one piece.

A bench grinder is your best option using a contraption to keep the face of the piece flat with the side of the grinders wheel.

You don't have to keep putting them in the same place it's 2mm off thin tube they'll be done and dusted before you could make a jig. plus unless its designed for it using the side of a grinding wheel is asking for an accident. KISS

You'd better inform the manufactures then,that this method of side grinding is dangerous,bearing in mind theres a few manufactures that make this attachment,I've also used the side of the grinders wheel to taper/bevel the four sides of 25mm box section.

It's in the HSE Abrasive Wheels Regulations, most abrasive wheels are not designed to be side loaded.
Because someone makes a device that side loads the wheel doesn't make it the safe thing to do!

Misuse of the Wheel

Wheel breakage can occur if excessive pressure is used to apply the workpiece to the wheel. Operators may be tempted to do this if the wheel is running slower than the speed recommended by the manufacturer, or if the wrong wheel has been selected so that the wheel face has become loaded or glazed.

Grinding on the side of straight-sided wheels is dangerous, particularly when the wheel is appreciably worn or if sudden pressure is applied.

I've seen the side of grinding wheels being used on surface grinders to grind faces that could not be accessed anyother way. Maybe there are wheels designed for side grinding ?
