Milling a surface plate ?

Hi all.

Got a surface plate other night. Its not te best but for £40 i cant complain. dings here and there but i wont be a aerospace engineer with it lol.

I reckon ill just flat it back with a block, cant be bothered to scrape it as it looks hard work and i dont need like as said above.

And i have been told i cant stick it on my mill to clean it back then flat it more with a block.

I just ask why not use a mill, are mills that bad ? How accurate are mills when doing this kind if work ?

when i got it home, christ its heavy haha. its 24" x 12"

a quick DA with kero and 240G

and a bit more, all of 10 mins work lol

only be used for when making tooling etc. looking at some gear from Hemingways. Aero V8.......i wish haha

i have a stone int shed, well somewhere. for sharpening chisels. reckon tat will do, its dual type so two grades.

I know - I still wonder if my 750kg welding table would fit on your planer. The 38mm top is bent at the edges where the idiots welded the legs on - who would have thought 38mm steel would bend

Don't know about your mill, but mine is. When I renovated my Eagle surface grinder the table was badly dished so it sagged at the extremes, so I milled it "flat" before scraping it in. When it came to scraping, I had over 3 thou to remove, by hand!
The trouble with the mill is the table is only supported over a short distance of the saddle. A boring mill that has ways longer than the table would perform better.

I’d start again with it and treat it as a material donor
