Miller syncrowave 250

I found this http://link.marktplaats.nl/128656555 Miller syncrowave 250 on dutch ebay and I really like it. Therefore I have some questions:
• Would it be something for me, the newbie frame builder who wants to tig weld all kinds of materials?
• Does anyone know what the silver box on top is for?
• I think the torch is water-cooled. An air-cooled torch seemed preferable to me because of the light weight handling. Could an air- cooled torch be fitted to this machine?
• It doesn’t seem to have pulse arc. Is pulse arc an important feature on a tig-welder?

Hi Dutchman, I think the silver box is the water cooler. The thing to consider with those big Millers is the amount of input current needed to run them, if you're planning on using it at home it'll need 92 amps to run it at it's full output current! I don't see any reason why you couldn't retro fit an air cooled torch to it.

Yeah, 92 Amps (or 15HP going through an electricity wire) sure is a lot!
I read that the machine should be installed 15m away from computers, TV etc. Is that also necessary if there is a brick wall between it?
I’m also curious what such a machine would sell for in the UK. You have any idea?

Here in the US, a used Sync 250 starts at about $1200 on ebay, many in the $2200 range.

A air-cooled torch will work fine. Hooks up the same, just does not use the water connections. My Airco has water connections, I went with a 150A air-cooled. Do wish I went with a 200A air-cooled torch.

Should do almost anything. If it comes with a footpedal, you then can do without fancy features.
