Miller prices in rip off Britain

Hi guys, i am new to this site and can i say what a great job you are doing. Its the best resource for welding that i have ever come across. I am looking into buying a new Miller tig and have phoned 3 or 4 distributers up but the prices all seem to differ alot for the same spec machine. Does anyone know who is the cheapest miller dealer in Britain ?
I have looked on e.bay and i cannot believe how much cheaper they are in America. My friend bought something from e.bay America a couple of months ago and apart from shipping he had to pay import duty and VAT on top, he was gutted. Is there any way of buying a Miller product in the UK without being absolutely fleeced to the max?

The UK Distributor also has to pay VAT and Import Duty plus the cost of the equipment is higher because it needs to be CE marked which involves redesign / testing etc.
You need to look at what sort of Service the Distributor supplies, price isnt as important as value.

You could just buy from the US, get it shipped over - with the strong pound at the mo you might save a bundle, but remember VAT and import duty all add up (its charged on the delivery cost too!).

And if you have a problem, its an aweful long way to take it back to the shop

Problem is Tucker wants a good deal, so he has to go to a miller agent for the best price, I can get miller no probs so can weldequip but not at the same price as a Miller agent,

Why Miller? Why not some 1st class European producer?

Thanks for the advice chaps, much appreciated. I do want the best deal i can so it looks like i will stick with the Miller agents. I like the 3 year warrenty with Miller, my mate has had a couple over the years and they have been very good machines.
I can still save a few hundred getting it shipped from America even with the extra tax that has to be payed but if anything does go wrong with it then i am not sure of the outcome. .

and as the Importer you will be responsible for ensuring it meets CE standards. Probably cost you thousands, alternatively you could be fined and have the equipment confiscated.
As far as I am aware no-one has been taken to court YET so you could take a chance.

People bring into my sales counter, machines that they have brought from China, Screwfix, machine mart etc looking for techincal help, they also want us to explain what all the controls do, set them the welder up so it will produce a nice weld etc and then walk away spending £3.00 on some bits to get there cheap welder working, you have a number of good quality distributors in your area that will give you a good service with after sales backup, I agree why should we pay more than if you import but it is not the distributor who is fleecing you and unless you guys support you local distributor then all that techincal advice etc will go
