Mill transport England to Scotland, any company suggestions?

Hi there,

Firstly not sure if this is the right category to post in so please correct me if it isn't.

I just found a King Rich Milling Machine Model KR-V2000, going for under a grand however it's down in Preston and I'm up near Glasgow and whilst normally I'd just stick it on a friends trailer and drive it back I don't think I'd get away with that during this lockdown (unless picking up a mill that has to be collected by the 5th counts lol).

So what companies do you recommend for transporting it that?

If it's for work at all, then it's all ok, just go and get it. If you're stopped, its for your own personal business. Easy. The evidence is right there on the trailer...

Even if you've never filed a self-assessment tax return, there's nothing to say you can't or won't!

Fizzy's firm shifted my Bridgeport from Portsmouth to Suffolk.

I had to pay for a double pallet as it overhang a bit (as you might @Bki26) but it was still terrific value - around 1/10th the price of "professional" machine movers.

I think they are heavier than a Bridgeport. Find out the weight as tail lifts are rated to 1000kg. I know some are 1500kg but nobody will move over 1000kg due to H+S.
If there are forklifts at collection and delivery we can do up to 2000kg.
Collection is the hardest part. Much easier with a forklift.
The machine needs to be on a bigger 120x100 pallet. Preferably with a sheet of ply on top and through bolted.
The head on a Bridgeport will swivel 180 degrees which makes it far more stable.

Nothing beats a dedicated hiab vehicle however they charge per mile so would probably be rather expensive to Glasgow unless he has a return trip planned.

The fact it's so far I'd normally not consider it but the auction reserve is £750 and there was only one £90 bid so could get for 500+commission+vat and it would actually be for my friend who's a retired engineering lecturer so would be a nice thing for him and another reason why I fancy it.

If the collection point has a forklift then we could ship it to one of our Glasgow depots. Then you could collect from there with a trailer. They can load you with a forklift.
A lot cheaper than driving all that way. We have many customers who do this kind of thing.

See how co-operative the seller is. As fizzy says, rotating the head downwards makes it a lot lower and more stable.

Potentially, you could get them to remove the whole head and put it on another pallet if it is too heavy. One bolt to disconnect DRO display and sellotape it to the table. Four bolts to remove head. Cut the power cable if necessary (it is just four core).

The drip tray/swarf catcher should just lift off, which reduces the size a little. Remove the knee handle (and other handwheels if possible). Drop all loose pieces into base casting so they cannot be lost in transit.
