Mill scale how to remove

Hello everyone. is there an easy way of removing mill scale prior to welding
ive tried sanding with 60 grit it will take forever and cost a furtune in pads
ive got no shot blaster is there any other technique

Angle grinder with a flapper wheel... decent quality one (with decent power)... If you are in a rush, angle grinder with a disk.

Hi Guys I have been spying on this site for ages. Morning Big Al.
This posting inspired me to get on board.
Ths stuff http://www.bilthamber.com/deoxc.html is the bees knees for this job. I asked the makers if it would do the job and they were a bit cagy so I figured I would give it a go. It is not too toxic a substance, just to try I put my bare hands in a bucket full of a saturated solution, the nicks and cuts smarted a bit but not to bad, I admit I thought it was abucket of water. The makers also claim that it has no hazardous by products and can go straight down the drain.

For hotrolled strip soak it over night in a drainpipe full of the stuff, in the morning the scale just wipes clean off. Aaaah not more frenzied anglegrinder sessions.
for complex shaped structures mix the stuff up with wall paper paste, coat the piece to be cleaned, wad it with tissue paper and then cover it in cling film, a messy business but not as bad as cup brushing everything. This method also works to a degree with Jenolite but not as well.

Well I never. Chunko's made it!. Welcome aboard matey. You should get yourself oveer to the intros section for a proper hello.

Ratty is our resident proper artist. She usually pops in in the middle of the night for some reason when everyone else had gone to bed (they strange Norfolk types live different to the rest of uz). Keeps disappearing for months on end too, but otherwise, life and soul etc. Bit like yer good self.

 

[Hitch]

Go with a grinder with a grinding wheel, a light touch will remove it in seconds. If surface finish is important a flap disc will be better, but slower.
You only need to remove it in the area to weld really.
