cant imagine theyre any better/worse than digital calipers? which might be worth converting for the job, since theyre only £3.50ish? rather than £30+

Wouldn't want to rely on them either.
Starting with a decent set of digital calipers would be a good start.
My mitoyo are extremely good. Too good to hack up for scales.

got mine from Chester FOC with my little mill, keep forgetting to turn it off occasionally, but does the job no problem. Make sure the scale moves through easily.

My Chinese mill came with one fitted, a useful addition and worked quite well until the plastic mounting ring on the quill worked loose. Only accurate if the mounts are well made and soundly mounted.
