Mileage costs

Transit 3.5t flat bed.

Any idea of what mileage costs i should be charging i/e £ per mile? Used it for a job for someone the other day. Certainly not mates rates!

We charge customers 50p a mile, that's for normal cars though. The customer still pays hourly rate for travelling as well.

You often see ebay/forum adverts for £1/mile, for moving bits of kit around, etc.

Iirc, Inland Revenue have a scale on their website. Intended for employees, but you could use it as a basis for your charge.

how do you equate the above to a per mile charge, plus you need to somehow add an hourly wage.

if your doing 30 mpg@£1.22pe liter thats 19p per mile
if your insurance is £500 per year say 20000miles a year
2 tyres per year£100
service/MOT say £150

say an average of 500 hrs to drive 20000miles at 40 mph average,labour at £10=£5000
£5750 is 30pence /mile+your fuel =48pence per mile

these figures are aproximate but you get my drift

I reckon if you assume
Ford Transit 3.5Te Flatbed Replacement Cost £30,000.00
VED £400.00
Insurance £1,000.00
Breakdown Cover £150.00
Cost of Capital 9%
Depreciation 30%
Annual Mileage 30,000
Fuel Cost (inc VAT) p/l £1.25

and average fuel consumption around town of 20mpg (at only 30k miles/year it must all be in town).

Then your Fixed or Standing charges for the truck are 44p/mile or £7.89 per hour.
Variable or Running or Marginal cost for fuel and servicing run at 26p/mile.
Labour - at a nominal £10/hour - costs around 87p/mile or £15.49 per hour.

Of course if you are doing long haul courier service at 100k miles per year up and down the motorway then it will be very different!
