Mild Steel TIG help

Hi All

I am starting my level 1 TIG at college next week and want to get some practise before hand. What i need is some information on what rods, electrode and gas i need for mild steel, the details are:

2mm 500x50mm mild steel plate

Welds
3 beads
Lap Fillet Weld
Tee Fillet weld in the flat position
Tee Fillet weld in the horizontal/vertical position
Open corner weld in the flat position

These i will be practising using a Miller Dynasty 200 DX

Any and all advice gratefully received.

you will want some argon gas
as for the electrode, i take it you mean the tungsten i would say thoriated (red tip) just be carfull with you are sharpning it, wear a mask, you would want about a 30 degrees prep on it as well.
and as for the filler wire you would want something like E70s2 in 1.6 or 2.4mm, i would get both and play and see what you like to use.

Any flavour tungsten except pure or zirconiated will work fine. I suspect the college will be using ceriated. Download and read the miller TIG handbook, covers pretty much everything including torch and filler angles of attack for different weld geometries

Filler choice would be either er70s2 (A15) or er70s6 (A18). The A18 wets out better, A15 is a bit more 'pasty' by comparison. I suspect the college will be using A15. Personally i'd use 1.6mm filler for this thickness, to begin with at least as you'll probably be running lower amperages (smallish coupon sizes and to slow everything down a little to begin with) until you've had some practice. 2.4mm will likely overcool the puddle making things a bit trickier unless you can go faster with more juice

The art to TIG welding imo is to get a comfortable position. We have a tiny bench we sometime play with small stuff to TIG on and have a nice big log to sit on.

A15 rods as sold on the forum shop are fine 1.6mm

Some thicker rods are handy to get the hang of feeding them into the weld so you don't hit the tungsten so much but the college will most likely set out what you will be using. You'll be practising grinding the tungsten plenty if my experience is anything to go by
