Mild steel rust protection

Have got to make some brackets for indoor shelving, rustic look. But how do i go about protecting these from rusting?

I've got some very high zinc content paint (used for painting offshore steelwork) from Bilt Hamber (which can be overpainted).
It seems like good stuff

galvanise them ,,, like farm gates ,,,, thats rustic . Just not pretty rustic, in fact not pretty at all.

Zinc phosphate primer is FAB and a bit cheaper than paints loaded with zinc metal. "Zinc 182" is available as an aerosol; good enough for stuff living indoors

I’m not sure if the OP is wanting to leave them bare? In which case I’d clear lacquer or varnish them. Apologies if I’ve misunderstood!

For indoors on bare steel probably with scale on still just a coat of linseed oil for me, wipe on wipe off, job done. Could use wd40, same application wipe on wipe off.

If wanting to paint them and for indoors just get all the rust off and paint with any half decent single pack metal paint should do. Even Aldi sell metal paint which folk on here rate as being fine.
