mig welding

Hi all,

I am a newbie to this so please go easy on me, I do a small amount of welding mainly on friends cars etc and for this purpose I have a small 150 amp machine.
the problem I have is that when I weld with the metal below me so to speak it is fine I can do nice runs and wire speed is fine however when I am welding upside down on a floor pan for instance the wire feed is a bit erratic and there seems to be a whooshing sound coming from the gun and the arc seems to be brighter.
so what I would like to know is do I turn up the wire speed up for welding upside down even though the welder is set up fine for welding below.
any help would be greatly appriciated

Moved to the correct section.

Sounds like your wire feed speed is too low.
When welding on the flat the melting wire will naturally want to fall towards the weld but upside down it will want to fall towards the torch so up the speed a little to compensate. You may even need to turn the power down a notch.

I shall have another play later cant turn down the machine as its on its lowest setting at 50 amps, the scale for the wirefeed is from 7 oclock round to 5 oclock and its currently at 12 oclock maybe I should invest in one of those portamigs
