MIG Welding tuition please in Derbys/Notts

Hi, I'd love to learn how to use a MIG welder. I bought a gas MIG welder but have never used it. I thought I'd 'teach' myself, but would rather be shown. If anyone offers an informal service near junction 26 of the M1 I'd be very grateful to hear from you.

just get some scrap and post up the pics, with the welder you have and settings you used, plenty of knowledge on here to get you welding right - thats what ill be doing

I read your post and thought "GET IT OUT THE BOX AND HAVE A PLAY!".
That's not a criticism aimed at you - more an insight into my way of thinking that all new shiny things must be ripped outa the box as soon as possible

Generally, new members post seeking advice; before they have a machine, or they state a purpose for wanting to learn: ie. vehicle repairs, wanting to be an artist..so the members can respond accordingly.
There are also those that blindly 'give it a go' but then find their technique needs improvement.

Yes; you could probably find someone on here that would more than happy to give you some one-to-one, but you could do a lot worst than take jasongtr's advice. Post up your practice pieces, and then 'let the forum guide you (Luke)'.
Please don't feel that you are being ignored on purpose: Only jasongtr posted to say what most of us thought

Cheers guys, Thank you for posts. I assumed learning to weld would be the same as learning to play golf. i.e. get some tuition 1st so you don't practice faults that will be hard to undone the longer one leave it. I bought a 2nd hand mig welder (that I hope works) as I've always wanted one as I'd love to do small car repairs and bits and bobs around the home. I'll dig it out and give it a go.

Im at Derby round house doing city and guides up to level 3 now and working on getting coded in some area's most of the lads that are working along side me had never picked up a torch a year ago and are doing well. Give Derby collage a call there is a level 1 starting in Feb its more than basic stuff.

If you're looking at signing up for a welding course at a local college be certain that the course is aimed at your requirements. Most of them are for people who want to take up welding as an occupation with an NVQ or its equivalent at the end of it. As such even a 'cheap' beginner's course can set you back £500! If you only want to nail the occasional 2 bits of metal together that kind of money might a bit of an overkill. However if you're (re)building cars and motor bikes for money it could be a good investment. The last thing you want is to kill someone with a sloppy weld that fails at 70mph+

Making mistakes makes you a better welder it's fun watching your welding get better and better

Practice, Practice, Practice
Get some scrap and get a feel for welding them together
then try break them apart (just to check strength of welding)
Like most things in life the more that you do the better you will become
If you find that you like welding then see about doing some courses
but most of all. Enjoy!
