I didn't get on with the Haynes manual. They seemed to write a lot about the history of welding and about bits of machine, then skipped through the actual how to weld really quickly.
I've found Practical welding ISBN 0333609573 quite interesting and useful, though it doesn't cover the basics, and covers all types of welding. Lot of info to get into the one book.
Prefer a good novel myself.

i've got a copy of the Haynes Car Body/Welding book somewhere
only ever flicked through it, i think it has quite a few reprints of practical classics stuff in it
it seems to an ok book for anyone having a go at car restoration for the first time

I have the Haynes manual as a .pdf adobe file, plus several other welding books on pdf format, including Welding Secrets (second edition) by Hal Wilson,(very informative on stuff like where to weld to avoid cracking, and how metal will bend and cool under tension etc. Many good old timer welding stories too) and Soldering Brazing & Welding. A manual of techniques, by Derek Pritchard. Plus several other 2 thousand page + tomes of welding method, lore and tech' specs'.
I printed the first 3 out and put them inside plastic wallets and folders, for protection and longevity, not to mention its easier to read and have easy access them, away from the computer.

thats an idea, i have about 20 of them, it would be easier than emailing them as some are very large at over 40Mb.

Please don't use the forum for distributing copies. It's illegal and could result in this site being shut down.
Besides, if everyone copied books instead of buying them the authors would stop writing them. So the answer to the question "any good welding books" in 20 years time would be "there are some old out of date ones but nothing useful".

Now this place is a mine of infomation i know...Fantastic site.
But can anyone recommend any books for night time bed/sitting on the toilet reading....!!lol
