Rather than weighing them in, scrapyards will often do swaps of scrap for useful stuff off the 'pile'.
Much better than having to draw a cheque.
I've a slate at my scrappy
My scrappy used to have bins/piles of useful stuff, last time I went there was very little, they had been broken into so get rid of stuff every few days now.

I've seen thieving g***y scum blatantly take stuff off the mixed scrap pile, put it in their van and then weigh it in again, at my local scrappie.
I tipped a load of junk earlier this summer, mostly mild steel but had a couple of stainless valve fittings I couldn't really be bothered to separate.
Weighed the van, tipped the scrap, moved the van back to the weighbridge to get an 'empty' reading and Mr. P. Ikey left his Transit dropside, walked straight past the guy in charge of the weighbridge, sorted the stainless bits out from the mixed, put them in a biscuit tin and got back in his wagon.
I love winding them up... a few times over the years we've weighed in decommissioned x-ray cabinets: a tonne (literally!) of lead being piled on the scales makes a few jaws drop
