Mig Tip Dip

Reading over a few guides and watched a few videos on YouTube and see them mentioning Tip Dip for the shroud and to put a bit on the contract tip.

Is it worth getting any for good maintenance of the welder? I have just ordered some Parweld Mig Pliers.

Always used the aerosol type anti-spatter spray to protect the tip and shroud.

Hi arh1a,

My tip is take the shroud off and dip it in when it is warm, don't put the contact tip or the wire in, or it will create more spatter than normal until it burns off.

I use tip dip, my shrouds last ages, looks like a small tin of red grease. I dip the first inch or so of the torch when it's hot and hang the torch with the shroud pointing down so any excess drips off.
Be wary of using anti-spatter spray on the shroud as most of them are water based now.

Thanks for everyones reply, so when you say put it on the torch when its hot do you mean weld something first then apply it? Im guesing putting it on cold is not a good idea?

I you do it when its cold, youll just end up with a big lump or red goo blocking the shroud.
I normally do it when its warm, but pull the shroud off and dip it in.

If you get it all over tip and wire, your first few welds will probably have some porosity where it runs into it.

This is much better than the red grease type stuff IMO. Its a white fluid that does a similar job, but without the risk of porosity. Lasts forever as long as you remember not to knock the tin over.

I use Tip Dip , it does what it says on the tin ! Dont know what its made of but it sure is sticky !

I think I may go for ESAB Spatter Shield like Welderpaul mentioned when Weldequip has it back in stock.

How hot does the Shroud have to be? ie could I leave it out in the sun to get hot then dip it?

Just do a bit of welding and then 'dip your tip'.

I use 60/40 , neat soluble oil/candle wax.

As the song goes, "What you need is a great big melting pot."

When not being used as shroud dip (see Phil's post) then it makes excellent tap lube.


When workshop space is at a premium one pot is better than two.

I also use the tip dip after a quick weld on a piece of scrap to get the nozzle end hot, dip the end of the nozzle in about 15mm, use the same scrap to do another bead which burns off the excess dip and then good to go on the proper welding, which by then doesn't leave any porosity or contamination due to the dip. I think that the dip is wax based.

Tip dip is usually Lanolin based.
