MIG penetration question

I am looking at a small MIG that will weld up to 1/4 inch material. I am wanting to weld rod together of up to 3/8 inch. While that is a larger diameter, my thought is that it would work since I can weld from all sides, and that the 1/4 penetration would be over halfway, thus guaranteeing a decent weld.

Is my logic remotely sound?

Sounds feasible but what purpose does the 3/8 rod have, is it structural or decorative?

Should have been more specific. For decorative purposes.

In that case, if it's just something you'll be doing occasionally then you should be fine with the 150a machine if you prep the bars before welding.
Ideally you'd be better off with a little more juice, say 180a if you think you might be doing it regularly.
