Mig CC or CV

I’m sure we all know that mma/Tig is constant current when it comes to welding and Mig is constant voltage…( or have I got the other way round? )….
Anyhow, it got me thinking, there are Mig guns available to add on to an mma/Tig set….. which sort of flies in the face of convention?

So can Mig ( gas or gas less) be done with an appropriate torch using a mma/Tig set?

TIG/MMA = constant current.


NO you can't mix or match the function or welding sets.

Can you supply a link? I would be interested to see what they have attempted to do. I assume the "MIG" torch is a wire feeder (spool gun) of some sort.

It is possible to use a constant current source but I don't know off hand why one would want to - that is, what the advantages are (or alleged to be).

A "CC MIG" would control the wire feed speed to maintain a constant voltage.

I am sceptical that this could be a cheap addon to get MIG functionality from an MMA machine. Crikey, a cheap MIG is 2'6 anyway.

Setting up a suitcase wire feeder

Anyone have experience of using a voltage-sensing suitcase wire feeder connected to a CC (constant current) power source (an inverter stick welder)? Does varying the current on the power source have the same effect as varying the voltage on a standard MIG welder? How does wire feed speed...

Here’s a link….

That one is to connect to a standard MIG welder. It has one purpose in life, to move the roll of wire from inside the machine to near the tip where it pokes out and gets hot. As it says, that is useful if the wire is thin or soft and has issues travelling the full (normally 3m) length of the cable.
