mig butt and fillet test anyone?

Hi I've been told today I'll be doing a coding in a week, 15mm plate butt joint 300mm x 150mm carbon steel and a 8mm plate fillet 185mm x 150mm carbon steel....anyone give me a run down with approx amps/volts it would be much appreciated I'd been expecting a tig coding. I've never welded carbon steel will it require carbon steel wire? what dia.? is there a root pass? etc.. I will add more info as I get it. I'll only have material for three goes. Anyway all help much appreciated thanks. Joe

Sounds similar to the ones i do now and then, pretty basic stuff, normally includes a stop-start in the root, or fill.

Settings wise, the guy from the testing firm normally sets it up to the specific parameters for the procedure when ive done it.



If youve been expecting a TIG test, id voice your concerns to whom ever booked it.....

Your day to day work is tig i assume?

Hi, well today was on mig but we've banged out a thousand foot plates, way too hot just a 'no money job, last week was tig aluminium, which i enjoy. My colleague in doing stick code, procedure which hasn't been used by the firm in a year , and as I say I've not welded carbon steel? Tig just seemed obvious as we use it all the time and considering 'some' of the work we do is high spec I'm surprised the jobs don't demand codings.
Hope you're right and the test guy sets it all up, wouldn't be so bothered if I could stay an evening and run a few (lots) of weld but tight on material.

I've never welded carbon steel

I bet you have, low carbon steel is mild steel

I realise it could be a way of defining mild steel, but a colleague give me the impression it was a high carbon as he mentioned a spool of wire we may or may not have, anyway i'm sure I can get somewhere close, just the daunting unknowns. cheers.
