MIG brazing . repair of modern boron steel automotive panels. Boron steels

hi all

im into a repair job on a pug,206cc04 .rear end ,cut the boot floor out and the two 1/4 panels and some lamp panals .its my wifes car and on my back to get it done in my workshop.i now got most of the work done. just the welding and paint to do now.

whats the crack with this welding on this car .MIG brazing . repair of modern boron steel automotive panels.?

can i setup my mig to do it.its a porta mig compact 215.

There are a few threads in this section that might be helpful - click search this forum (not search) above on the right and type in brazing. The page in the tutorials is just a play to see what the stuff is like and might not be all that useful.

ok ,can the portamig 215 do it.

How did you cut out the floor. If you used oxy acet or plasma you will already have adversely affected the steel and you might as well use mild steel mig.

sorry did not say how.

8mm spot weld bits and a drill and air saw.the job is on stop till i know about this.
if i was to get the wire and gas to do it .and my mig will go has low has 20amps and its got a fine tune on it.will i get away with it.

i will be plug and seam welding.

when drilling out the spot welds it looks the same has mild steel .

how weak will the steel be?.if i was to weld with mild steel?.

i need to know soon has do i can get the stuff in . thanks

I am a panel beater in a bodyshop and i have done a few of these peogeot back ends you dont need to worry about any boron steel in this rear end i dont think you can make your mig work as we have just spent a couple of grand on a welder that does this job from a company called stanners if you want more advise about these welders you could go on there website i hope this is some help to you

I also wanted to say you will burn out a normal spot weld in seconds you need to buy special drills the same using an airsaw because the steel is so hard that is a way to find out if you have boron on a car

i did drill the spots out with a std 8mm drill bits .i was thinking the same .if it was that stuff it will be to hard to drill.

i will panel it up now.

there is a modification for the portamig to make bottom end 15 amps and give 2 settings for mig brazing !
only problem is i do not know if the 100 quid they charge is for while built or to have it added i have the pdf for it if you wish i could post it up.

can i do that. or do it need to be sent away?.

it is a new transformer, and is cheaper when the machine is bought new as it is then a like for like swap
to do yours it would have to go to them

MIG Braze tests

Hello all, i am looking to see if anybody knows of a formal testing procedure for MIG brazing. This repair method is becoming more and common in the vehicle body repair trade and i am trying to stay on top of it all. Any companies that can carry out this testing, assessment? It is needed for up and coming audits. Any info would be appreciated.

It's not always used for areas like boot and floor panels more like the cage surrounding the occupants and the method of attaching to it is spot welding under specialised conditions with extra pressure and different shaped tips so the brazing is not the be all and end all and may still not be up to the original manufacturers specs. I'd do some more research before I committed myself.
