Where do I start with this... 3/8" mild/carbon steel plate with backing 1/4" root opening for MIG Short-Circuit
*.035 wire ER70S-6 solid core
*Tri-mix shielding gas on about 22 shielding gas pressure
*22 volts 220 wire speed for flat groove weld with pushing angle of about 10 degrees off 90 degrees and passed with no defects at all. Went to do horizontal groove did the root at 22 volts 220 wfs and the cover passes(stringers) at 21 volts and 210 wfs. Root passed and the face failed, didnt even bend it just snapped.
*Everything pre cleaned, Base metal has been ground, mig gun and nozzle cleaned after every dozen passes or so, no porosity no shielding gas leaks, no birds nests, beads are slightly flat on the root and about 1/16" convex on the face welds, no slag inclusions, using a 350 degree tempil stick not going over interpass temps.
*Welding Procedure Sheet is wrong wrong wrong im in a college, it states for flat groove to run 19 volts at 180 wfs
Whatever else i missed i can fill in with questions... ive passed stick bend tests on 3/8" and 1" up to 4g aswell as a 3g 6010 root pass without backing on 1" with 7018 cover passes and passed that test aswell.
Does this sound like an error from the welder itself or settings on the machine set to low? Like i said i was getting minor undercut on the settings listed above... would this be compensated by holding the toes and/or going slower to tie in the toes or dont move the gun to help tie in the edges and just wait for the puddle to fill in? Any help would be appreciated.
