Mid range battery SDS?

I could do with a battery powered SDS drill that's got more oomph that my Bosch combi battery drill. Can anyone recommend me a mid range model? I'm a blacksmith needing to drill into a bit of domestic masrony every now and then on site, I'm not a builder using it day in day out who needs a Hilti top of the range job, but I do need something with a bit more grunt that my combi drill.

Yes obviously I don't want to buy crap and spend twice but neither do I want to buy something far over spec for the sake of one time 15 years into the future when I need to drill a bit of granite for 30 seconds. For sake of reference I own a cheapie ScrewFix own brand 5kg Titan corded hammer drill which has served me fine, but I need something cordless.

I was looking up the specs/reviews of some Bosch drills around the £220 mark earlier and they said 18mm holes was the max capacity. That seemed a bit pants given my 18v Bosch combi battery drill I got in a twin pack for about £150 was doing 12mm holes in new brickwork the other day when stepped up from 6mm pilot to 8mm then 12mm. Would the 18mm holes mean without a pilot or with?

I can recommend a 12v Milwaukee sds have used this lots fitting out the new workshop, nice and light.
Doesnt have the hammer only option for chiselling, think it is rated up to 16mm.

Wait until lidl have them in next. £40 (39.99 i think) and its a brilliant bit of kit for the price. I do ‘hard’ DIY and its coped with everything I’ve thrown at it.

I use matabo with 18v lythium it on HD batteries.
Can run approx 20+ m12 masonry sds 4" deep into decent stone, up to 20mm blacksmith drills to good effect with the add one chuck.
Its really an investment in the battries and charger then the other kit is cheap.
Been onto matabo well over a year now maybe two.

Without jumping up to nearer the £400 mark this seemed to be my lot...

You could not run an 18 mm without a pilot with any real accuracy with any masonry drill

Buy a long extension lead.


One of the main reasons im still 110 despite being domestic these days is the leads. Happily drag a long lead around a house and up a ladder without issues.

I've got a Bosch 18v sds drill for occasional use at work. It's got 2.0ah batteries and is ok for normal fixings, I think the 24v one would be needed for more than just to odd 18mm hole.

I may have fibbed a smidge...I need it for domestic work and the occassional outdoor public site work where gennies are the only other option.

Sorry. I missed the glaring battery request. Still think an extension and the lidl SDS drill could be a good option.

Wouldnt spending your drill budget on a sh gennie be a better option.
Run any tool of it in those situations then.

Screwfix do one for £199 with a 4.0ah battery with a 20mm max in concrete too!

If youve already got a Bosh combi drill, get a "bare" Bosh SDS, stick with the battery form. Battery SDS are quite compitent these days.

Screwfix have a Dewalt 18V SDS that does up to 22mm and has rotary stop. It comes with a 4.0ah battery,charger and case for £199.99

Yep that's certainly an option. Ideally I'd have both. I've only used a gennie once and that was a big welder-generator that I borrowed, what sort of size gennie would I need just to run power tools off?

No one has mention s/h and the word 24volt, totally different animal to the sub 20v drills. You can pick up a decent 24v sds dewalt for under £50 and just buy new batteries . That will eat an 18mm drill and the battery life while in use is amazing.

As 8ob said second hand worth lookin at iv the Bosch 36v and Iv tried loads a cordless sds and none compare no problem with 24mm into concrete.
There’s 2 types of 36v from Bosch and there very different so if considering the Bosch be sure which one your getting

The battery is the most expensive part so id stick with what you have plus its easier to keep track of whats charged with one set of battetys
A state sds should go bigger than rated capacity if using pilot holes first and good quality drill bits
