Don't fancy shelling out on an on going basis for Office 365 for a new computer.

Was Microsoft Office 2016 the latest version before Office 365?

Looking at buying it from here.

I've got it on a number of servers for work.

also note with some versions its not backwards compatable so if your using a newer version and your clients arnt then it wont work in theres

I'd be interested to know how you get on with it, I'm in the same boat, I have it installed on my Win 7 machine, but not my Win 10 and no means of re-installing if it of needs be.

Presumably you can save the downloaded files and install offline?

The download files for office are generic from https://setup.office.com/?ms.officeurl=setup. You register for an account and add your product key there it will give you the download files to use.

I was in the same dilemma when I moved to Windows 8. I refused to fork out the subscription for Office 365 pure extortion. I downloaded the Microsoft compatible Apache Open Office https://www.openoffice.org/ & it does all I need(& some more beside) Its free to use but if you feel a pang of guilt they’ll gladly accept donations.
They all seem to be up to this moving to the cloud, Ive used photoshop elements for years & now I get regularly plagued by Adobe to subscribe to their cloud services.
Im sure it does have advantages,you get to use the latest software & if you computer goes down you don’t need to reload the program but it all comes with a hefty price tag.

These are good for most folk who want to bang out a letter or add a few numbers up and I'd recommend them for the money conscious.

If you're already using Excel and do more of the complicated functions,procedures & macros etc. (insert flavour of free alternative)office IME, isn't quite up to the level Excel is.

Exactly what I found. I've tried Libre Office and the others and they all fall down on macros. The compilers don't work either.

I’m still running Office 2000, in particular Word and Access, on a W10 box . When ms do an update it stops working and asked for a one of the Office discs and then off we go again.

IME of using that. I've found that it does check. However, If you leave it a while and then register a second on a different computer it allows you to install and activate it.

At the worst you end up with a number to ring for MS product activation which is normally automated and you press the button to tell them that it's only installed on one PC.

YMMV though and it's been a little while since I last had to do it.
