Does anyone know if the barrel comes out of the frame on an eg. 0-1"M&W micrometer or Mitotoyo? If so how?
I know how to remove spindle, adjust sleeve, not sure if the sleeve will pull off the barrel which would be my next course of action.
Thanks
I pulled an old digital Mitutoyo one apart a little while ago, the sleeve slid off and the barrel was a press fit in the frame. I used ER collets to grip and pull them off without damage. No idea how you're supposed to maintain the alignment of the barrel when you re-assemble. Mine was damaged to begin with and went in the bin afterwards.
FWIW, I bought a £5 Lidl one to strip for parts and the barrel was glued (loctited) into the frame. I ended up cutting (sanding) the frame off the barrel.
On a good make, I suspect that something less crude might be used.
Do you wish to retain all parts intact as part of the diassembly?
I have a M&W deep throat mic which I used to use for my Kawa penny shims, probably will never use it again but would prefer non destructive dismantling.
Pinch the micrometer part for a taper measuring micrometer project (Keith Rucker).
@Maker barrel alignment is fairly easy if the adjuster is taper mounted and the sleeve has an adjustment hole. Screw spindle into barrel until to zero. Lock the spindle, put the outer sleeve onto spindle taper so the outer scale is where you want to read it. put ratchet on to lock the taper in place. Undo the lock, slacken off and retighten as you would when measuring something, lock the spindle. Adjust the inner sleeve (on the barrel) so it reads zero using the pin spanner and little recess to turn it. Tubal Cain has a vid on YT showing how.
I mean alignment as in getting it straight, so the spindle moves freely in the frame and the anvils remain parallel. Mine was already broken (Or I wouldn't have been messing with it), but I couldn't get it working smoothly afterwards. The press fit is very short so quite easy to get it on the ****.
