Metallic cellulose recommendations...

Last car I painted I used one of those earlex HVLP electric set ups and it was a solid celly colour. That was quite a few years back now and I have since bought a 150l 3hp compressor. I bought some metallic cellulose paint before the 'ban' kicked in from my local paint supplier. I plan to paint the new project car in July and am wondering what kit to use and also the process.

Should I stick with my hvlp electric gun or buy a gun to use with my compressor? I've read various opinions as to what sort of gun to use with metallic, gravity or suction, also putting nuts in the pot to keep the metallic distributed evenly while spraying. I'm not sure if the paint I bought requires a clear coat afterwards, would this be a good idea anyway for flatting? Are there time limitations between the colour and clear applications?

Just looking for general advice really, I read the excellent how to's on here but can't find much specific to metallic.

Oh, another thing, do you need to use special coarser strainers with metallic?

you dont lacquer celly as a rule.dont rub a metallic,or you will cut the metal particals,which knackers the finish.
the way to go,is get your colour built up with a mist coat,1-2 full coats,let it tack off the do a wet on wet to finish.
wet on wet in a full coat all over,then go over that with another coat right away.
get a gun for compressor,regular strainers will be ok.

As for suction versus gravity feed, I think it's really down to personal preference, can't see it making any difference to the finish. Personally I prefer suction feed, especially if you need to spray upside down!

is it really worth the risk/hassel to save £50? devilbiss do a "cheap" gun for about £60-80 FLG series

i think what he is refering to is
years ago you could get straight metalic celly.
no base coat no laquer just add thinner and go i used it a few times but it wasnt brilliant.
i havnt heard of it for years

Cheap guns are a lottery imo. Got cheapie that does OK, over a fairly limited range. Done pearls and candies with it. Bought another and its utter crap, going in the bin.
Got an s/h Devilbiss small gun for a fiver that knocks both into a cocked hat. Whatever one o'them is...

Also bear in mind that, that particular gun has a 14.5CFM air consumption. Can your compressor keep up with that?

Are you sure it's a metallic celly?
When I did my bug the metallic was a 1k base which I sprayed 2k lacquer over. I certainly had to apply the lacquer after the base coat had "flashed".
The reason for this is the lacquer binds with the b/c.

If the b/c fully dries (mine was 1k) the lacquer can peel.

What Earlex have you got Rich? I'm half toying with the Earlex HV5000 which Screwfix have on offer @ £119.94 (less overspray to annoy the neighbours with )

It's definitely a metallic celly. I went back to the paint supplier and they were recommending a 1k acrylic laquer over the top... They also had Iwata guns on special offer like this one:

It certainly felt like a nice gun and I don't mind spending that kind of money. Does anybody know how that gun compares to the budget Devilbiss one?

I'm just stripping the underside of the body to do that in epoxy mastic 121 and then I'll get on to the paint..

Not going for any particular look but more German than anything, it's got 350bhp (to start with) of subaru power so more stealth performance than anything.

It was just the cheap Earlex they did at the time, can't remember which model but was about £60 from Argos...

devilbliss gti hvlp gravity fed is the mutts nuts, i have one for my T I primer and the other for top coats, although remember you can buy a £5.00 gun or a £500 gun but youve got to know how to use them to get a good finish,

the best advice i was given when i started learning to paint was DONT RUSH IT! take your time and be methodical about every little detail. your prep work is the most important part of the job.
