I have 2 metal spray kits, one looks unused, also a good amount of powder................

We used to get quite a few rotor journals sprayed by Boothams at Scarborough, did an excellent job

I also have a couple of the powder variety, but never used them. Mine that I have used is a Metco gun that take an 1/8" metal wire (I've used pure zinc, but also steel welding rods !), and an air driven turbine pulls the wire into the oxy-acetylene flame, and dashes it onto the work.

What kind of surface prep is needed? I've looked at the process for zinc spraying for a few things, but never got as far as doing it for cost reasons.

I've got a kit as well, also never used for anything, 3 containers of different powdered metal, no idea what they are. I'll have to dig them out and have a look, they'll probably end up in the for sale section before long along with other stuff that needs shifting.

Seems to be a good number of these kits unused. Wonder if they would work well for repairing cast iron parts?

For the Metco gun, zinc spraying big objects they recommend grit blasting to clean and give a key to the small zinc blobs that splat onto the metal.

However when building up shafts and putting on hard surfaces they recommend coarse turning on a lathe with a sharp tool, having first turned down to a smaller diameter to make sure that the build up has some body to it.

The powder type are really only for shaft build up and surface treatment, whereas the Metco will do either.

Haven't done any for a long while but yes the process is very reliant on correct prep. From memory a fine fast thread cut with a tool ground to 45 deg, with the diameter reduced and a good chamfer at each end. (need to keep the lathe well covered as it goes everywhere)

Should dig the kit out and give it a go again. There is a liquid you paint on to mask areas you don't want the covering to stick to. Problem is i don't have a clue who much the consumables are these days. Imagine i would need to go direct to Castolin Eutectic.

That's probably the reason i haven't contacted them.
I am fully expecting to be told that i need a new application torch as the design has changed and that the new powders and solutions are not fully compatible with the older version i have or some other sales based rubbish.
Then get pestered for months with sales calls and requests to send a rep down for a trial and maybe some fantastic deal if i was to invest in a new kit they will include a days training for free.

Then back in the real world i need to save up just to re fill the acetylene cylinder.

Powder bottles turn up on ebay quite often. I seem to remember that for shaft build up it is recommended to spray molybdenum first as it has a higher adhesion than other metals, then put your bulk material on top of that.

I had a steel trailer grit blasted, zinc sprayed, then twin pack painted by a place close to Crystal Palace football ground at least twenty years ago - it's been heavily used carrying aggregates etc and still is in reasonable condition.

i've got a torch and some of the fancy powders, used it a couple of times and results are geting a bit better, what id really like to get hold of is some more tubs of powder even empty ones would be usefull, so i chould fill them and try commonly avalibe powderd metal, zink would be very usefull.
