Metal Halide Floodlighting ??

I am wanting to put up a high quality floodlight outside my workshop,and after doing a bit of research on the internet i have come across METAL HALIDE FLOODLIGHTS.
I have not seen these before and was wondering how much better they are than the much cheaper halogen type floodlights?.

The ones i was looking at are 250watt and cost about a £100 upwards which is about 10 times more expensive than the B@Q ordinary halogen jobbies.
I don't mind investing in quality so the cost i can live with,but i was wondering if you knoledgeable people on here know anything about these Metal Halide Floodlights?.

Metal Halide lamps give a higher level of ilumination than a similarly rated halogen, they also give better colour rendition and should last longer.

Having said that would I use one to light the outside of a workshop? Probably not, I'd use low pressure sodium, horrible colour but do you need anyting more on the outside?

Once you buy the fitting and ballast, you can use either HPS or Metal Halide bulbs in it. The bulbs are cheap enough to buy one of each and decide yourself

They are certainly better than halogen, the light seems more spread, assuming you use the right fitting for the application.
Once on you need to leave them for a bit to warm up to full brightness, and you cant turn them off and then back on withing a few mins, the pressure inside the bulb stops the arc working, untill its cooled down enough to start.

The metal halide lamps are a much nicer light, the sodium ones are like street lights, a yellowy orange colour.

Dont know how much difference there is regarding initial cost or running costs, but id guess they would be substantialy cheaper than halogens, for the smae lux level. (i think lux is the measurement of light?!)

Not really answering the question here, but we have a lot of flood lamps around the farm. Many were 500W halogen, but I've found myself replacing the bulbs with 150W as they fail. Though for us the lighting is just to make it possible to walk around without bumping into things rather than for working in, and anything too bright caused dazzle problems.

Try this low energy PIR floodlight or this (no PIR) both 36W equivalent to 300W Halogen. I've got some & they are good
