Metal framed door

Hi peeps
I’ve been asked to make some metal framed doors for internal of house. would I make frame from angle and how would I hold on glass sections.
Any ideas welcome pics too

Use one of the glass bonding sealants and glue it in place.

Buy a door. Will save you much headaches!!

honestly, this is the best route. i did it for a living and we were roughly 2+ days per door&frame, not including the time cutting the various sections. Adding up cost of materials + time(labour) would make this an expensive door.

What's wrong with bonding glass into an angle iron frame? Quite a common 'industrial chic' technique especially with wired glass in a blackened steel frame, and avoids the complication of trying to fabricate a glazing channel. Adds to the structural strength of the door too.

I would guess thermal expansion will put stresses on glass.

Not suggesting a hard bonding agent like epoxy, but a resilient sealant/bonding agent. Remember most fixed glazing on cars, including windscreens, is bonded in place.

As a kid back in the 50s, I lived in a new build house with steel windows made by Critall throughout. No idea how they were bonded but they were strong. The only drawback was condensation and frozen panes in the winter but a lot of that came from living in a house with no central heating, just electric fires in each room. Critall are still in the business of making steel frames.

I grew up in a house with Critall windows too. As far as I can remember the glass was held in with conventional linseed putty.

my dad worked for crittals for over 30 years .it was hopes windows before crittal took over. the glass was held in with metal casement putty but standard linseed putty will be ok

(Hot?) rolled steel sections with welds at the corners. The 1950s era windows were made with special section material so it was only the corners, hinge and catch fixings which needed welding - presumably an electric weld process. Frames I have seen were galvanised after assembly. Whether this was always the case from the 1920s through to today I don't know.

You had a heat source/fire in each room? You lucky, lucky....

Hopes windows of birmingham had the largest "hot dip" galvanising plant in the uk,their windows were fitted in large buildings like the houses of parliament & the gpo tower in london as well as many important buildings abroad,they were asset stripped by slater walker who bought them out & sold off all their factorys & leased them back,they amalgamated with crittall, they owned 50% along with 50% owned by british steel of the Darlington & simpson Rolling Mills [Rise Carr Rolling Mills] in Darlington,sadly long gone where they rolled all the W20 & other sections there as well as wagon wheel security rim section & narrow guage rails, the window outer sash was welded but the dividing astragal bars were all tennoned into mortice slots in the outer frames then gavanised,I still have[& use] my sash hammer [used for riveting over the tennons when altering/repairing] I had a full set of tools for setting frames till some scroat nicked them.

Sadly no,if we had to cut them down for any reason we mitred the corners as original & stick welded them then painted them with drygalv,& the inner bar ends were cut & knotched & a teonon cut & a slot [mortice]drilled & filed then sprung in & riveted over with the sash hammer.

After a cold winter, my dad fitted a gas wall heater in the hallway . . . the front bedroom never got any warm air - it all went into the back bedroom directly off the top of the stairs. So he cut a hole in the ceiling directly above the heater and then through the floor of the front bedroom . . . lovely My mates were stunned . . . so was the new cat when it fell through . . . otherwise tall cylindrical electric heaters - which heated up and distorted your lego if you left it on top to dry out . . .the good old days . . hmmm . . .

Single coal fire in the living room & one portable gas heater to share, was our lot. I rarely got the gas heater.
